We don’t leave water hooked up. We fill our tanks, and when tha is gone, we empty the grey/black and refill with fresh water. BUt if we leave for an extended period of time I still turn the water pump off.

::I went through this process a few months back and ultimately ended up getting a mattress topper, which was a lot cheaper and so far has done a good job. But, in my search, Brooklyn Bedding and Wilderness RV Mattress were highly recommended.
::Not much more to add, except maybe moochdock at a friends or family members property if they live near where you plan to stay.
::+1 for Thetford. Havent had any issues with it, unlike our old Dometic 300 which started leaking internally and rotted/warped our bathroom floor.
::I use RV Whisper. It has pet monitoring, battery and propane monitoring, and more. But might be overkill for what you’re looking for.
