There are over 100 active wildfires in the country as I write this, so I felt it would be good to cover some important wildfire safety tips when RVing, or camping in general. Feel free to add yours in the comments!

          Pre-Trip Preparation

          1. Stay Informed: Regularly check local news, weather reports, and wildfire updates in the areas you plan to visit. Use tools like the FEMA’s National Risk Index and RV LIFE app for wildfire risk information.
          2. Plan Routes: Have multiple routes in and out of your destination. Avoid areas with active wildfires or high wildfire risk.
          3. Emergency Kit: Prepare a comprehensive emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, medications, important documents, and a flashlight. Include items like a GPS device, compass, local maps, radios, respirators, and water filtration devices.

          Understanding Wildfire Risks

          1. Know the Area: Familiarize yourself with wildfire-prone areas and seasonal patterns. Wildfires are more common in dry regions like Arizona and New Mexico, especially in the summer.
          2. Wildfire Speed: Be aware that wildfires can travel at speeds averaging 14.27 miles per hour, faster than the average human running speed.

          During Your Trip

          1. Fire Bans and Restrictions: Adhere to all fire bans and restrictions. Avoid campfires, barbecues, and other open flames when advised.
          2. Clear Area: Keep your campsite clear of flammable materials. Store propane tanks and other flammable items safely.
          3. Weather Monitoring: Continuously monitor the weather and fire conditions. Utilize apps like Watch Duty, Fires, Firespot, and The Wildfire Tracker for updates.

In Case of a Nearby Wildfire

          1. Stay Alert: Be aware of smoke, ash, and other signs of nearby wildfires. Trust your instincts and be ready to leave early.
          2. Evacuation Plan: Have a clear and practiced evacuation plan. Know the quickest route to safety and have a predetermined meeting spot if traveling with others.
          3. Communications: Keep your phone charged and have a way to communicate with family or friends. Consider a portable charger or solar charger.

          Evacuation

          1. Pack Essentials: Quickly gather your emergency kit, important documents, and any other necessary items.
          2. RV Ready: Keep your RV fueled and ready to move at a moment’s notice. Ensure all systems are functioning correctly.
          3. Drive Safely: When evacuating, drive cautiously. Smoke can reduce visibility, and roads may be congested with other evacuees.
          4. Follow Evacuation Levels: Be aware of the three wildfire evacuation levels:
            • Level 1: Be ready; wildfire threat in your area.
            • Level 2: Get set; evacuation warning or notice.
            • Level 3: Go; evacuation request or order.

          Post-Evacuation

          1. Shelter: Find a safe place to shelter away from the fire area. Follow instructions from local authorities regarding safe areas and evacuation centers.
          2. Check-In: Let friends and family know you are safe. Use social media or emergency contact numbers to keep them informed.
          3. Stay Updated: Continue monitoring the situation. Only return to the area when authorities declare it safe.
