Smart Meters Could Change How RV Campgrounds Charge for Electricity
Most overnight RVers still have electricity included in their campsite rate, but new smart-meter technology is making it easier for campgrounds to bill guests based on actual power use. KOA recently integrated Wild Energy meters with its reservation system for long-term guests, while the same technology can also support automated billing for shorter stays. Rising electricity costs, big differences in power consumption between RVs, and increased EV charging are giving campground operators more reasons to consider separate electric charges. Nightly metering is not yet widespread, but RVers may want to check a campground’s electric policy before booking, especially for longer stays or EV charging.
Winnebago Will Close Two More RV Plants as Manufacturing Consolidation Continues
Winnebago Industries plans to close manufacturing facilities in Lake Mills, Iowa, and Middlebury, Indiana, then shift production to other company locations. B-Van motorhome production will move to Forest City, Iowa, while Winnebago towable production will relocate to the nearby Grand Design campus in Middlebury. The company says no RV product lines are being discontinued and customer service, warranties, ordering, and dealer relationships should continue as usual. The announcement follows two Iowa plant closures in 2025 and comes as Winnebago works to reduce costs and adjust manufacturing capacity during a challenging period for parts of the RV market.
Falling Rock Kills RV Traveler During Glacier National Park Trip
A national park trip ended tragically for a Missouri family after a falling rock crashed through their vehicle on Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road. Rex Schowengerdt, 73, was riding in the backseat with his wife, Chris, on July 11 when the rock struck him. He was airlifted to a hospital and died five days later. The recently retired couple had been beginning an RV trip through several national parks with relatives. Family members described Rex as someone who deeply loved Glacier and the outdoors, and they said they are taking some comfort in knowing he was visiting a place that meant so much to him.
