Bear Attack Injures Two Hikers Near Old Faithful
Two hikers were injured by one or more bears on Yellowstone National Park’s Mystic Falls Trail near Old Faithful on May 4. Park emergency crews responded, and the incident is still under investigation.
Yellowstone says this is the first bear-related visitor injury in the park in 2026. Several trails, backcountry campsites, and fishing areas have been temporarily closed during the investigation. The park is also reminding visitors to stay 100 yards from bears, carry bear spray, make noise, hike in groups, avoid low-light hiking, and never run from a bear.
Study Finds Brain-Eating Amoeba in Warm Park Waters
A federal study detected Naegleria fowleri in warm, thermally influenced recreational waters at Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The amoeba was found in places such as hot springs, thermal runoff, and warm-water mixing areas, not typical campground beaches.
Researchers analyzed 185 samples from 40 sites between 2016 and 2024, with positive detections in 34% of samples. No human infections were reported from the tested park locations. The main risk comes when contaminated water enters the nose, so visitors should be cautious around warm freshwater, hot springs, and thermal runoff, especially when swimming, soaking, diving, or submerging the head.
Congress Weighs Tax Deduction for RV Loan Interest
A new bill in Congress would make interest paid on qualifying RV loans tax-deductible. Rep. Rudy Yakym of Indiana and Rep. Dina Titus of Nevada introduced H.R. 8672 on May 7, 2026, aiming to extend a vehicle loan interest provision to trailers, campers, and RVs.
The proposal would apply to RV loan debt incurred after December 31, 2025. Actual savings would depend on the loan size, interest rate, tax bracket, and final bill language. The bill has not become law, so RV buyers should not assume the deduction will be available unless Congress passes it.
