Two hikers were injured by one or more bears on the Mystic Falls Trail near Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park on the afternoon of May 4.
According to Yellowstone National Park, emergency services personnel responded to the incident, which remains under investigation.
The park says this is the first incident of a bear injuring a person in Yellowstone in 2026. The last visitor injury from a bear happened in September 2025, and the last fatal bear incident in the park occurred in 2015 in the Lake Village area.
Several trails, backcountry campsites, and fishing areas have been temporarily closed while the investigation continues.
Yellowstone is reminding visitors to stay 100 yards from bears, carry bear spray, make noise, hike in groups of three or more, avoid hiking at dawn, dusk, or night, and never run from a bear.
