New RV Electrical Safety Rule Moves to 2027 Timeline

New RVs with 30-amp or 50-amp electrical service will be required to include a grounding monitor interrupter, or GMI, under a rule approved by the RV Industry Association. The device checks for a proper ground connection before allowing shore power into the RV and shuts power off if that ground is lost. The rule was delayed from 2026 because manufacturers did not yet have enough listed devices available. It now takes effect January 1, 2027, with enforcement starting with each manufacturer’s 2028 model year production. The change applies to new RVs, not older rigs already on the road.

Campgrounds in Eastern Iowa are seeing more long-term stays as out-of-state workers arrive for data center construction projects. KCRG reported that some RV parks that once depended mainly on weekend campers are now nearly full year-round. Workers say campgrounds can be a cheaper alternative to hotels, especially during extended jobs. The shift is creating more competition for campsites near Cedar Rapids, Palo, Amana, Fairfax, and nearby areas tied to major construction work. Some campground operators say regular summer campers are having a harder time finding open spots.

Viral RV Towing Video Had More to the Story

A video of a motorhome dragging the front bumper of a Chevy Colorado spread widely online, but the RV couple involved says the clip did not show the full situation. David and Jennifer Sinclair were heading to Alaska when the tow base plate on their flat-towed Chevy Colorado separated from the truck frame near Fort St. John, British Columbia. They said the problem was caught within about a minute and happened while the truck was stopped at an intersection. The couple later ended their Alaska plans for now, drove the motorhome and truck home separately, and took the truck in for inspection and insurance review.
