Transportation officials in Colorado are currently assessing a bridge over the state’s largest reservoir after discovering a 3- to 4-inch crack in a steel beam last week.
As a result of the damage, the bridge has been closed to all traffic. This closure forces drivers to take lengthy detours, extending up to 300 miles and adding six to seven hours of travel time.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), under the direction of regional transportation director Jason Smith, is attempting to mitigate the situation by clearing and possibly utilizing seasonal roads, many of which are gravel or dirt, to facilitate travel disrupted by the closure.
Smith has acknowledged that the expected increase in traffic on these alternative routes could lead to further complications. Currently, CDOT recommends two main detour routes via major highways. The northern detour via Interstate 70 spans 354 miles with an approximate travel time of six hours, while the southern route via U.S. 160 covers 331 miles and takes nearly seven hours.
Just a heads up if you plan on traveling through CO anytime soon.
