We are entering one of the best times of the year to buy a TT (or so I’ve read). I have my eye on a used 2022 Jay FLight. I want to make sure I’m getting the best TT for the money and to make sure I’m not buying a money pit (Ha, all campers are money pits). WHat do I need to know about the TT before buying? Or what questions should I be asking? ANy advice would be appreciated. Keep in mind its used, which makes me a little nervous…

You’re correct, Fall is a great time to buy a new camper! You’re also correct that they can be money pits! lol

As far as questions, here’s a good start:

              1. How many people previously owned the trailer?
              2. Do you have the title for the camper?
              3. Do you have the previous maintenance records?
              4. Has the travel trailer been in any major accidents?
              5. Where was the trailer stored when not in use?
              6. Is there any warranty left on the trailer?
              7. Can I extend the warranty?
              8. How much does the trailer weigh?

I’d also recommend reading through this: https://camperfaqs.com/what-to-look-for-when-buying-a-used-travel-trailer. There’s a downloadable checklist you can use to help you inspect the trailer. Hope this helps!

Has the trailer had any water damage?

What’s the condition of the roof? Has it ever been repaired?

                      Are there any electrical issues?

And don’t take their word for it. Check for these things. I’ve seen to many roof issues, that lead to leaks, that lead to expensive water damage and mold issues.

Great questions! We do plan to have an inspection done and I’ll be sure these things are addressed. 🙂

Good questions above! It also depends whether you’re buying from a private party or a dealer:

                              Buying from a Private Party:

                              • Why are you selling it? This can give insight into whether the trailer has any issues or if the owner simply doesn’t use it anymore.
                              • How long have you owned it? This can indicate if they’ve had enough time to know the trailer’s quirks or potential problems.
                              • Has it been in any accidents or sustained damage? You’re more likely to get a direct answer from a private seller, but it’s good to ask to uncover any hidden issues.
                              • Do you have the maintenance records? They may not always keep detailed records, but asking can give you insight into how well the trailer was maintained.
                              • Can I take it to a mechanic or RV technician for inspection?
                              • Do you have the title? Is it clean and in your name? You want to ensure there are no liens or legal issues attached to the trailer.

                              Buying from a Dealer:

                              • Is there any warranty or dealer guarantee? Dealers may offer warranties on used trailers or certified pre-owned units. It’s important to know what coverage you’ll have after the purchase.
                              • Can I see the service or inspection report? Dealers usually inspect trailers before selling them and should have documentation of any repairs or service done.
                              • What are the financing options? Dealers typically offer financing, so asking about interest rates, terms, and monthly payment estimates may help you get a lower rate.
                              • Are there any additional fees? Dealers often charge fees for paperwork, inspection, or prep. Get a full breakdown of the cost beyond the sticker price.
                              • Can I trade in my current RV or vehicle? If you have a trade-in, a dealer is likely to offer that option, and it’s good to know how it impacts the final price.
                              • Can I negotiate the price or terms? Dealers might have more flexibility in negotiating, so asking about discounts, price reductions, or special offers can save money.
                              • What’s the return policy or exchange policy? Unlike private sellers, dealers may have a return or exchange policy, so it’s important to ask upfront.
                              • Are there extended service plans or roadside assistance packages available? Some dealers offer extras that might be valuable if you’re planning to use the trailer extensively.

OMG, this is awesome! The trailer we are looking at is at a dealer, but if we happen to find one we liek from a private party these questions will come in handy! Thanks for this!
