Since we just had a major hurricane with a few more projected to be on the way, it’s important to check the road conditions of your planned route. Many roads will be obstructed, completely shut down, or just plain dangerous to travel on.
- Check the local Department of Transportation: For example, in Florida, the FDOT updates road status regularly, especially during emergencies like hurricanes. Check their website or social media accounts for updates. Each state has its own DOT website you can check
- Google Maps / Waze: These apps provide real-time traffic updates and can show road closures and traffic incidents along your route. They also offer alternative routes if needed.
- Local News Websites or Social Media: Local news stations often report road conditions during emergencies. They might provide detailed reports for specific regions.
- Highway Patrol: You can also check the HP’s website or social media for updates on road closures and hazardous areas.
- Emergency Management Agencies: County or city emergency management websites or social media accounts might provide specific information about road accessibility.
- Ask on social media or local contacts
When traveling:
- Always prioritize safety. Avoid flooded roads; water can hide hazards like washed-out roads or debris.
- Check for bridges and causeways specifically, as they might be closed for safety inspections after a hurricane.
- Be cautious of downed power lines, which can make roads dangerous even if they look passable.
- Keep your fuel tank at least half full, carry water, snacks, and perhaps a flashlight, as services might be disrupted.
- Always check the most updated information before setting out, as conditions can change rapidly.
Be safe out there!
