Arizona Landmark May Become the Nation’s 64th National Park
A bill passed by the U.S. House could soon change the status of Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona. Lawmakers approved the Chiricahua National Park Act, which would redesignate the long-protected site as a national park if the Senate and the president also approve it. The area has been federally protected since 1924 and is known for towering volcanic rock spires that earned it the nickname “Wonderland of Rocks.”
Supporters, including several Arizona lawmakers, say the new designation could draw more visitors and boost tourism in nearby communities like Willcox and across Cochise County. Not everyone is on board. Some tribal leaders and conservation observers have voiced concerns that increased tourism could affect cultural sites and natural resources. The proposal does not automatically add new funding or expand federal management authority, which has also raised questions. Even if the designation changes, the site would remain managed by the National Park Service and open to visitors as it is today.
Massive RV Parks Could Turn Texas Town Into an “RV City”
Two enormous RV park developments planned in Abilene, Texas, may reshape the city as thousands of workers arrive for a massive new data center project. One development, called Cottages at the Frontier, would create about 945 RV sites across more than 100 acres with amenities like paved roads, a gym, dog park, and pickleball courts. Monthly rent is expected to be about $1,550.
A second project nearby, Elmdale RV Park, would be even larger, with space for roughly 2,300 self-contained RVs. Together, the developments reflect the growing demand for temporary housing tied to the $25 billion data center campus expected to employ thousands of workers. City leaders view the projects as a practical response to a housing shortage. Some residents, though, worry about heavier traffic, strain on water supplies, and the effect such rapid growth could have on property values and the character of the area.
Unexpected Visitor: Cougar Spotted Resting Beneath RV in British Columbia
A Parksville, British Columbia, resident had an unusual wildlife encounter when a cougar briefly took shelter beneath her RV. Lorelei Scott said she first heard loud rustling noises under the vehicle and assumed raccoons were responsible, since they are common around the RV park where she has lived for several years. Something made her hesitate before stepping outside to check.
Shortly afterward, the park manager sent out a message warning residents that a cougar had been spotted underneath Scott’s RV and advising people to stay inside. A neighbour managed to photograph the big cat through a gap in a fence while it calmly rested beneath the vehicle. The cougar eventually moved on and has not returned. Wildlife officials were notified, and the encounter left Scott with a memorable reminder to trust her instincts when strange sounds come from outside at night.
Gas Prices Climb Toward $4 as Global Tensions Push Oil Costs Higher
Gas prices across the United States continue to inch upward, with the national average for regular gasoline reaching $3.99 per gallon on Monday. The rise slowed recently after prices jumped more than a dollar within roughly three weeks earlier in March. Diesel also edged higher, with the national average reaching $5.416 per gallon.
Several factors are pushing fuel costs upward. Tensions in the Middle East intensified after military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran in late February. Iran temporarily restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route that carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. These disruptions helped push crude oil prices above $100 per barrel at times. Seasonal demand is also contributing as spring travel increases fuel consumption, which could lead to higher transportation and shipping costs in the weeks ahead.
