Diesel Prices Surge Past $5 Per Gallon for Only the Second Time Ever

U.S. diesel prices have climbed above $5 per gallon, a level reached only once before in recorded history. Data from GasBuddy and AAA shows the national average crossing the threshold after a rapid run-up in recent weeks. Diesel is now about 36% higher than it was a month ago and roughly 7% higher than just a week earlier.

The increase is tied to global supply disruptions linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Diesel inventories were already tight before these disruptions began. Because diesel powers long-haul trucking, agriculture, and construction equipment, rising prices often move through the supply chain. Shipping companies such as UPS and FedEx have already added fuel surcharges as they adjust to higher costs.

Southwest Heat Wave Shatters U.S. March Temperature Record

An intense heat wave sweeping across the Southwest has produced the hottest March temperature ever recorded in the United States. A recreation community near Martinez Lake along the Colorado River reached 110°F, breaking the previous national March record of 108°F set in Texas in 1954.

The unusual heat is tied to a strong high pressure system parked over the western United States. Cities across Arizona, California, and Nevada have seen temperatures far above seasonal averages. Phoenix hit 105°F, roughly 25 degrees above normal for mid March and well ahead of the city’s typical first 100 degree day in May. Meteorologists say more than 18 million people were under extreme heat warnings as the system intensified.

Major Area of Big Bend National Park Closing for Two Years

Visitors planning a trip to Big Bend National Park should prepare for a major temporary closure. Beginning May 1, the Chisos Basin area will shut down for construction projects expected to run through mid 2028. The work is funded through the Great American Outdoors Act and focuses on replacing aging infrastructure.

A key part of the project is the replacement of the Chisos Mountains Lodge, originally built in 1964. Decades of foundation movement caused by unstable clay soils have damaged the structure, making repairs impractical. Crews will also replace a three mile water pipeline and other aging systems serving the basin. During construction, Basin Road, the campground, lodge, restaurant, visitor center, and several popular hiking trails will be closed. The rest of the park, which spans more than 800,000 acres, will remain open.

More Than 34 Million Americans Planning Spring RV Trips

RV travel is gaining momentum this spring, with more than 34 million Americans planning a road trip in an RV. That represents a 23% increase from last year, according to the RV Industry Association’s Spring Travel Intention Survey. Major events such as America’s 250th anniversary, the World Cup, and Route 66’s centennial are helping drive interest in road travel.

National parks and coastal destinations are topping travelers’ lists, and many RVers plan to bring their pets along. Outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and backpacking remain major motivators for RV trips. The survey also shows growing interest in longer drives, with more travelers planning journeys lasting four to fifteen hours from home.

Generational trends are shaping the market as well. Gen Z travelers are most likely to rent RVs, often using rentals as an introduction to the lifestyle, while Millennials and Gen X show the strongest interest in purchasing one. Across all age groups, the ability to travel flexibly and control costs continues to attract people to RV travel.
