Two questions – Our toilet kept running and filled the bowl and overflowed into our RV. I shut the water off but what would cause this?
Second, is there a way to prevent this from ever happening again? I’m afraid our flooring is going to warp now.

It’s most likely a faulty water valve. Essentially, the valve that controls water flow into the toilet likely failed or became stuck, allowing water to continuously fill the tank.
To prevent it you could install a shut off valve on the water lien to the toilet so you can quickly and easily shut the water off if it happens again.

Agree with Bill. A faulty water valve. Luckily they are easy to replace. If you let us know your toilet make/model we can point you to the right part.
