There have been many RV fires in the news lately, so I thought it would be a good idea to discuss some fire safety tips for camping. Below, I cover some of the more important tips for preventing fires, practicing fire safety while camping, and what to do in a fire emergency.

This is not an exhaustive list! And if you have any tips I’ve left out feel free to add them below! Stay safe everyone!

          Preventative Measures

          1. Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms
Ensure your RV has working smoke alarms in the living area and sleeping quarters. Test them monthly and replace batteries as needed.
          2. Install Carbon Monoxide and Propane Detectors
Propane leaks or improper ventilation can lead to deadly gas buildups. Install detectors and test them regularly.
          3. Keep Fire Extinguishers Handy
Have at least one fire extinguisher rated for Class A, B, and C fires. Ideally, keep one near the kitchen and another near the sleeping area. Check expiration dates and know how to use them.
          4. Inspect Propane Systems Regularly
Check propane tanks, lines, and connections for leaks or damage. Use soapy water to detect leaks and never use open flames to test.
          5. Maintain Electrical Systems
Inspect your RV’s wiring and electrical connections. Overloaded circuits or faulty wiring are common fire hazards.

          Safe Practices While Camping

          1. Use Caution with Campfires
Keep campfires a safe distance from your RV, avoid burning in windy conditions, and never leave a fire unattended. Fully extinguish fires before leaving the site or going to bed.
          2. Avoid Overloading Electrical Outlets
Don’t plug too many devices into one outlet, and use surge protectors to prevent electrical fires.
          3. Be Careful with Flammable Liquids
Store gasoline, lighter fluid, and other flammable liquids in approved containers outside the RV.
          4. Turn Off Heat Sources When Unattended
Turn off space heaters, stovetops, and other heat-producing appliances when leaving the RV.

          Emergency Preparedness

          1. Create an Escape Plan
Plan and practice how to quickly exit your RV in case of a fire. Identify multiple exit points, such as doors and windows.
          2. Keep Emergency Exits Clear
Ensure windows and doors designated as emergency exits are free from obstructions and function properly.
          3. Have a Fire Blanket
Keep a fire blanket on hand, especially for kitchen fires. They can smother flames without spreading.
          4. Know How to Shut Off Utilities
Learn how to quickly turn off propane, electricity, and water in case of an emergency.
          5. Educate All Occupants
Make sure everyone in the RV knows fire safety protocols, including how to use fire extinguishers and exit the RV safely.
          6. Monitor Weather Conditions
Be aware of fire bans or restrictions in the area. Dry, windy conditions can increase fire risks.

Great reminders! For pet owners, I would add placing a “Dog Inside” sticker (or whatever type of pet you have) on the door so firemen know to look for them.

How often do you inspect your propane system?

Preferably inspected once a year by a certified professional. I also do a quick inspection every camping trip.

Its also a good idea to have a fire extinguisher accessible outside the RV, like in a compartment or in the tow vehicle if you have one.

We have a fireproof safe to hold important documents, etc.
