More than 14 million Americans are planning to view the total solar eclipse in North America on April 8 from an RV, according to the RVIA. This interest has led to a significant increase in RV bookings and rentals, as Forbes points out:
- Bookings for the eclipse period have surged by nearly 660% compared to the traditional start of the RV and camping season during the Memorial Day weekend.
- Despite the surge, RVshare, a community for RV owners and renters, suggests that it is still possible to secure an RV rental for the eclipse.
- States within the 115-mile-wide path of totality, such as Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Pennsylvania, have seen a remarkable rise in bookings, with some experiencing over a 700% increase compared to the same date in 2023. Ohio, notably, has seen an increase of over 1,000%.
- RVshare advises flexibility for those still looking to plan their eclipse trip, suggesting renting RVs from cities outside the path of totality, like Houston or Louisville, to accommodate for the high demand.
- Availability remains in many RV parks and campgrounds across states like Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. According to Spot2Nite, of 200 campground locations along the path, 24 have availability during the eclipse, and 41 have spaces on the night of the eclipse without requiring a minimum night stay.
What Forbes didn’t point out in their article is that many of the packages cost as much as $625 per night, with a two-night minimum! So, expect to pay more if you’re booking along the eclipse viewing path any time from now to April 8th.
