Outdoorsy

Outdoorsy

Outdoorsy is a massive peer-to-peer RV marketplace that connects you with private RV owners in your area who are looking to rent their RVs. They are like the Airbnb or VRBO of RV rentals.

The RV for rent by owner business model allows Outdoorsy to offer a massive amount of RV types and models for rent that a corporate RV rental company like Cruise America just can’t compete with.

Outdoorsy’s network spreads across North America, Mexico, and Canada, so you’re sure to find an RV rental near you that fits your needs.

Outdoorsy is our #1 option for those wanting to experience the RV life without having to buy one.

Outdoorsy Features

  • A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau (BBB)
  • Industry-leading $1,000,000 liability insurance policy and physical damage protection (backed by Assurant)
  • 24/7 Roadside assistance and customer support
  • They will deliver, setup, and pick up your RV rental
  • Long-term RV rentals by owner are frequently available at reduced weekly and monthly rates (see our guide How Much to Rent an RV for a Month? for real-life monthly rental examples)

Outdoorsy Rental Prices

Outdoorsy RV rental prices vary, but on average, you can expect to pay:

Important: Some RVs feature unlimited miles, while others, you may have to pay for usage above a certain amount of miles. Keep this in mind when shopping for an RV, as mileage costs can add up quickly if traveling long distances. This applies to all peer-to-peer rental companies that don’t have a set mileage cost.

Cruise America

Cruise America

Cruise America is a corporate RV rental company, meaning they have their own fleet of recreational vehicles instead of connecting you with RV owners like Outdoorsy.

Because of this, you’re limited to only one type of RV, a Class-C, that comes in four different sizes – Large (sleeps 7), Standard (sleeps 5), Compact Plus (sleeps 4), and Compact (sleeps 3). They do offer a truck camper, as well, that sleeps 3.

That’s pretty much it – no campervans, pop-up trailers, 5th wheels, etc. – just Class-C motorhomes. But, if one of their motorhome models meets your needs, that might not be a big deal.

There are also a few other considerations to take into account:

  • Their RVs are covered with advertisements for their company, NASCAR style.
  • Their reviews on BBB could be better.
  • There’s an extra charge for camping amenities like kitchen utensils, etc. Or you’ll have to supply your own.

Cruise America Features

  • Offer one-way rentals
  • RV’s are clean and safe
  • 45 years of experience in the RV rental space
  • 24/7 traveler’s assistance line

Cruise America Rental Prices

Cruise America RV rental prices vary, but on average, you can expect to pay between $115 to $265 per night, no matter which RV you choose. There doesn’t seem to be a noticeable price break with a small RV rental versus a large one.

And keep in mind, on top of the daily rental price, you’ll have to pay for the mileage and other fees with Cruise America.

RVshare

RVshare

Similar to Outdoorsy, RVshare is a peer-to-peer RV rental company where one can easily book a rental online from an RV owner. Again, the advantage of this kind of business model is that it opens you up to almost any type of RV imaginable across the country.

RVshare is comparable to Outdoorsy in almost every way, but one interesting aspect of RV share is its 5% cash-back loyalty program. If you plan to rent an RV regularly for vacations, this could really add up.

One downside (when compared to Outdoorsy) is their base travel insurance plan only covers up to $500,000, whereas Outdoorsy’s is $1,000,000. You can raise it for a higher fee if you want. However, this is a personal choice, and you may not even need or want the extra insurance.

RVshare Features

  • A+ rating by the BBB, though they do have a lot of customer complaints
  • Base $500,000 Liability Insurance
  • 5% Cash-Back Loyalty Program
  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance – phone, chat, and email
  • Long-term RV rentals by owner are frequently available at reduced weekly and monthly rates

RVshare Rental Prices

RVshare RV rental prices vary, but on average, you can expect to pay:

RV Ezy

RVezy

RVezy was founded around the same time as Outdoorsy in Canada in 2017. And while it quickly became the #1 rated RV rental company there, it’s still trying to break into the market in the United States (though it’s growing quickly).

RVezy offers the most types of RVs, the most reviews, and lower service costs in Canada compared to their competition.

They can’t compete with the likes of Outdoorsy or RVshare in the U.S. currently, but they are growing. And you may even find some great deals on their website!

RVezy Features

  • Industry-leading $2 million third-party liability coverage in Canada ($1 million in the U.S.)
  • 24/7 Roadside assistance and support
  • Easy to use mobile app
  • Long-term RV rental options are frequently available at reduced weekly and monthly rates

RVezy Rental Prices

RVezy rental prices vary, but on average, you can expect to pay:

  • Class A: $240 to $300 per night
  • Class B: $185 to $240 per night
  • Class C: $200 to $225 per night
  • Travel Trailer: $113 to $126 per night
  • 5th Wheel: $126 to $161 per night
  • Pop-up Camper: roughly $85 per night

El Monte RV Rentals & Sales

El Monte RV

El Monte RV Rental and Sales is similar to Cruise America in that it’s a corporate RV rental company with its own fleet of recreational vehicles.

Again, this limits the available types of RVs you can rent, as they only offer four styles of Class-C vehicles (from 22 to 30 ft long and sleeping 5 to 8 people) and one Class-A, which sleeps up to 6 people.

They are one of the oldest players in the game, having been around for over 50 years now, but have far fewer rental locations than Cruise America.

El Monte Features

  • Over 50 years experience in the RV rental industry
  • 24/7 toll-free roadside support
  • Rent online or at one of their many locations across the U.S.
  • Offer one-way rentals

El Monte Rental Prices

El Monte RV rental rates are all over the board depending on your rental dates, how far in advance the reservation is, type of RV, location, etc. Your best bet is to visit their website, enter your travel dates, location, and the number of campers to get an estimate.

And keep in mind, on top of the daily rental price, you’ll have to pay for mileage with El Monte (up to .39 cents per mile or $39 per 100 miles), which can add up if you plan to travel long distances.

Other RV Rental Companies

  • Escape Campervans: This smaller campervan rental company has locations in 11 cities across America and 2 in Canada. They have a fleet of over 600 Class-B camper vans and jeeps of different sizes.
  • Apollo RV Rentals: Apollo RV Rentals is another campervan rental company with locations in several countries worldwide. However, in the U.S., they have paused operation due to COVID-19.
  • Luxe RV Rental: With only a small fleet of mostly Mercedes Benz Campervans and four locations across the U.S. (in California, Nevada, and Arizona), they can’t compete with any of the above in terms of selection convenience and proximity. But, if you want a luxurious RV vacation in California, Las Vegas, or the Phoenix area at an affordable price, they may be worth looking into.

What Is the Best RV Rental Company?

The overall best RV rental company is Outdoorsy, in our opinion. Their massive selection of RV types and models, overwhelmingly positive reviews and ratings, combined with their best-in-class support and protection, give them the edge over the competition.
