Many RVers use Starlink to stay connected in places where cell service does not exist. A recent change from SpaceX may affect how some travelers use the system while driving.
Starting Friday, Starlink disabled the ability to use its $5 per month Standby Mode plan while a vehicle is moving.
Some customers began noticing the change when the Starlink mobile app displayed a message that says “Starlink Disabled while moving.”
The restriction appears to have been added quietly.
Starlink also updated one of its support pages to clarify that Standby Mode was not meant for in-motion use. The page now states:
“Pausing your service with Standby Mode is not intended for in-motion use.”
Standby Mode was introduced last August as a way for customers to pause their regular Starlink subscription instead of canceling it. The plan costs about $5 per month and allows limited internet access with speeds capped at 500 Kbps, while still offering unlimited data.
Some travelers realized the plan could still provide basic internet access while on the road, especially when paired with the portable Starlink Mini dish. Even though the connection was slow, it was often fast enough for simple tasks like sending messages or checking email in areas without cell service.
With the new restriction in place, the system now stops working if the dish detects movement while using Standby Mode.
Customers who want to use Starlink while driving will now need one of the company’s Roam plans, which start at about $50 per month.
Starlink has not publicly explained the reason for the change.
For RV owners who only use Starlink while parked at a campsite, nothing about Standby Mode appears to have changed. The plan can still be used when the dish is stationary.
The main difference is that the $5 Standby plan can no longer be used while driving down the road.
