A lot of RVers know the dry weight of their camper. Far fewer know what their RV weighs after it is packed for a real trip.
That number can change fast. Food, water, propane, tools, clothes, bikes, camping gear, pets, passengers, and “just in case” items all add weight. For towable RVs, some of that weight also ends up on the tow vehicle.
Weighing your RV before a trip is one of the simplest ways to see where you actually stand. It can help you check your total weight, axle weights, tire load, and how close you are to the ratings listed by the manufacturer.
This does not have to be complicated. In many cases, a truck stop scale can give you the basic numbers you need in just a few minutes.
Why RV Weight Matters
An overloaded RV can affect how the rig handles, brakes, and rides. Extra weight can also put added stress on tires, axles, suspension parts, wheels, and the tow vehicle.
The tricky part is that an RV may look fine sitting in the driveway or rolling down the road. You usually can’t tell just by looking at it.
That is why scale weight matters. It replaces guessing with actual numbers.
It’s also worth weighing the RV the way you actually travel. A scale ticket from an empty camper does not tell you much if you normally travel with full closets, food, chairs, tools, fresh water, and a packed truck bed.
Weight Ratings You Should Know First
Before going to the scale, find the weight labels on your RV and tow vehicle. They are usually on a certification label, tire and loading label, or in the owner’s manual.
Here are the main terms to understand.
GVWR
GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
This is the maximum allowed weight of the fully loaded vehicle or trailer. For an RV, that includes the RV itself plus cargo, fluids, passengers where applicable, and other added weight.
For a tow vehicle, GVWR includes the truck or SUV, passengers, cargo, hitch equipment, and the tongue or pin weight from the trailer.
GAWR
GAWR stands for Gross Axle Weight Rating.
This is the maximum weight allowed on a specific axle. A vehicle can be under its total GVWR and still have too much weight on one axle.
That is one reason axle weights matter. The total weight alone does not tell the whole story.
GCWR
GCWR stands for Gross Combination Weight Rating.
This applies to the combined weight of a tow vehicle and trailer, or a motorhome and anything it is towing. It is the maximum loaded weight allowed for the whole combination.
CCC or OCCC
CCC stands for Cargo Carrying Capacity and is commonly used for towable RVs.
OCCC stands for Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity and is commonly used for motorhomes.
These labels tell you how much weight can be added before the RV reaches its GVWR. Fresh water counts as cargo. So do passengers, personal items, food, tools, and other gear.
Water is heavy. One gallon of water weighs about 8.3 pounds. A 40-gallon fresh water tank can add roughly 332 pounds before you pack anything else.
Tongue Weight or Pin Weight
Tongue weight is the downward force a travel trailer puts on the hitch.
Pin weight is the downward force a fifth wheel puts in the bed of the truck.
This weight counts against the tow vehicle’s payload and axle ratings. That is where many RVers get surprised. A truck may have enough advertised towing capacity but still run out of payload once passengers, cargo, hitch weight, and trailer tongue or pin weight are added.
Where to Weigh an RV
The easiest option for many RVers is a certified truck scale, such as a CAT Scale at a truck stop.
Other possible places may include gravel yards, feed mills, moving companies, recycling centers, landfills, and some RV rallies or safety events. Availability varies by location, so call ahead when using anything other than a truck stop scale.
For the best result, weigh the RV loaded for travel. That means fuel, passengers, pets, food, water level, propane, tools, camping gear, and anything else you normally bring.
How to Weigh a Travel Trailer
For a basic travel trailer weigh, pull onto the scale with the truck and trailer fully on the scale.
Place the truck’s front axle on the first platform, the truck’s rear axle on the second platform, and the trailer axle or axles on the third platform.
This gives you:
- Front axle weight of the tow vehicle
- Rear axle weight of the tow vehicle
- Trailer axle weight
- Total combined weight
Next, weigh the truck by itself. Keep the same passengers, cargo, hitch equipment, and fuel level as close as practical. This gives you the truck’s weight without the trailer attached.
With those two scale tickets, you can estimate several useful numbers.
Your loaded trailer weight is the combined truck-and-trailer weight minus the truck-only weight.
Your loaded tongue weight is the weight added to the truck when the trailer is attached. To estimate that, compare the truck’s axle weights while hitched to the truck’s axle weights when unhitched.
Then compare those numbers to your tow vehicle GVWR, front and rear GAWR, trailer GVWR, trailer GAWR, hitch rating, tire ratings, and GCWR.
If you use a weight-distribution hitch, follow the hitch manufacturer’s instructions. Weight-distribution hitches can change how weight is carried across the tow vehicle and trailer axles, so setup matters.
How to Weigh a Fifth Wheel
A fifth wheel is weighed in a similar way.
Pull onto the scale with the truck’s front axle on the first platform, the truck’s rear axle on the second platform, and the fifth wheel axles on the third platform.
That gives you:
- Front axle weight of the truck
- Rear axle weight of the truck
- Trailer axle weight
- Total combined weight
Then weigh the truck by itself with the same passengers, cargo, hitch, and fuel level as close as practical.
The difference between the combined weight and the truck-only weight gives you the loaded fifth wheel weight.
The difference between the truck’s hitched weight and unhitched weight gives you the loaded pin weight.
That pin weight counts against the truck’s payload, GVWR, rear axle rating, tire ratings, and hitch rating. Fifth wheels often place a large amount of weight in the bed of the truck, so the rear axle number is one to watch closely.
How to Weigh a Motorhome
For a motorhome, pull fully onto the scale with the front axle on the first platform and the rear axle on the second platform. If the motorhome has a tag axle, follow the scale operator’s instructions.
This gives you the front axle weight, rear axle weight, and total motorhome weight.
Compare those numbers to the motorhome’s GVWR and GAWR ratings. Also check the tire load ratings and inflation guidance from the tire manufacturer.
If you tow a car, trailer, or cargo carrier behind the motorhome, weigh the full combination too. The combined number should be compared to the motorhome’s GCWR.
A standard truck stop scale usually gives axle weights, not individual wheel-position weights. That means it may not show if one side of the RV is carrying more weight than the other. Individual wheel-position weighing is more detailed and is often available through RV safety organizations, rallies, or specialty weighing services.
What to Check After You Get the Scale Ticket
Once you have your numbers, compare them to the ratings on the RV and tow vehicle.
Check these items:
- Tow vehicle GVWR
- Tow vehicle front and rear GAWR
- Tow vehicle payload
- Trailer GVWR
- Trailer GAWR
- Motorhome GVWR
- Motorhome GAWR
- GCWR for the full combination
- Hitch rating
- Tire load ratings
- Cargo carrying capacity or occupant and cargo carrying capacity
Do not rely only on the total weight. Axle weights matter too.
For example, a truck and trailer combination may be under the GCWR, but the truck’s rear axle could still be overloaded. A motorhome may be under its GVWR, but one axle could still be carrying too much weight.
What to Do If Your RV Is Overweight
If your RV is overweight, start by removing items you do not need.
Heavy tools, extra water, firewood, cases of drinks, outdoor gear, spare parts, and items stored in pass-through compartments can add up quickly.
Fresh water is another easy place to look. Traveling with a full tank may be necessary for some trips, but not every trip requires it. Since water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon, reducing water can make a noticeable difference.
You can also move cargo around to improve axle balance, but do this carefully. Moving weight may reduce load on one axle while adding it to another.
Never assume a heavier-duty hitch, airbags, helper springs, or upgraded tires automatically increase the manufacturer’s GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, or payload rating. Those ratings come from the vehicle or RV manufacturer.
If the numbers are close or confusing, check the owner’s manual, contact the manufacturer, or talk with a qualified RV technician.
A Simple Pre-Trip RV Weighing Checklist
Before heading to the scale:
- Load the RV the way you normally travel
- Fill fuel tanks as you would for a trip
- Include passengers and pets if practical
- Carry your normal tools, food, clothes, and gear
- Set the fresh water level to what you normally use
- Bring the RV and tow vehicle weight ratings with you
- Take a photo of each scale ticket
- Compare the numbers before the trip, not after
Weighing your RV is not about making camping more complicated. It is about knowing what you are actually driving or towing.
Dry weight is only a starting point. The loaded weight is the number that matters once you are headed down the road.
