Google has announced what it calls the biggest update to Google Maps in more than a decade, introducing new artificial intelligence tools designed to improve trip planning and navigation.
The update centers around two major features powered by Google’s Gemini AI system: a conversational planning tool called Ask Maps and a redesigned driving interface known as Immersive Navigation.
Ask Maps lets users plan trips with natural questions
One of the most noticeable changes is the introduction of Ask Maps, a new feature that allows users to ask complex questions directly inside the Google Maps app.
Instead of searching through multiple listings or reading reviews, users can type or speak a question and receive conversational responses along with map results. Google demonstrated examples such as asking where to charge a phone without waiting in line or where to find a public tennis court with lights available that evening.
The system pulls information from more than 300 million places, along with insights from over 500 million contributors.
Results are also personalized using activity within Google Maps, such as previously searched or saved locations.
Immersive Navigation introduces a more detailed driving experience
Google is also introducing a redesigned navigation system called Immersive Navigation, which provides a more visual driving experience.
The update adds a 3D view of roads and surrounding environments, including buildings, terrain, and overpasses. Visual cues highlight key driving elements such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs.
Buildings can appear transparent in certain situations so they do not block the driver’s view of the route.
According to Google, the system uses data from Street View and aerial imagery to create a more accurate representation of the world around the route.
Additional navigation improvements include smart zooming that helps drivers prepare for turns or lane changes, as well as voice directions that sound more natural.
Navigation will also explain route tradeoffs
The update also adds more context when Google Maps suggests alternate routes.
Drivers will be able to see the tradeoffs between different options, such as a longer route that may avoid traffic or a faster route that includes toll roads.
Google Maps will also continue providing real-time alerts for disruptions such as crashes or construction.
Behind the scenes, Google said the system uses a combination of data from the Google Maps and Waze driver communities to provide real-time information.
Improved guidance when arriving at a destination
Google Maps will also provide more detailed guidance as users approach their destination.
Before arrival, the app can show the exact building entrance, nearby parking options, and which side of the street the destination is located on.
The goal is to make the final steps of navigation easier once drivers reach the area.
What the update could mean for RV travelers
For RV travelers who rely on Google Maps for trip planning, some of the new features could make route planning and navigation easier.
The Ask Maps tool may help RVers quickly find things along their route by asking detailed questions instead of running multiple searches. That could include things like locating services, finding places to stop, or identifying nearby amenities without digging through listings.
The new Immersive Navigation view may also make it easier to understand unfamiliar roads. The 3D perspective highlights lanes, intersections, crosswalks, and traffic lights while showing buildings and terrain around the route.
At the same time, the update does not change one long-standing limitation that many RV drivers point out. Google Maps still does not allow users to enter vehicle height, weight, or length restrictions, which can be important for large motorhomes and towable RVs.
Because of that, many RV travelers continue to use RV-specific navigation apps or dedicated GPS units when route restrictions are a concern.
Still, the new planning tools and visual navigation updates could make Google Maps more useful for general trip planning and everyday driving.
Rolling out now across the United States
Ask Maps is already available to users in the United States and India, while Immersive Navigation is beginning to roll out across the United States.
Google said the navigation improvements will expand to eligible Android and iOS devices, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in in the coming months.
