Counter space can be extremely limited in an RV. But that doesn’t mean you can’t maximize what you have and make your kitchen work more efficiently!
These simple, practical tips will help you free up space and make your RV kitchen much easier to use.
1. Use Stackable and Collapsible Storage
Stackable bins and collapsible kitchen tools let you use vertical space more efficiently and save room when items aren’t in use. Bowls, dish racks, and containers that collapse flat can be tucked away when not needed. Stackable containers help organize food, utensils, and supplies more efficiently.
2. Swap Small Appliances for Smaller Versions
A full-size coffee maker or toaster might be convenient, but it eats up a lot of room. Switching to compact or travel-size versions of your appliances can give you that counter space back. Many smaller options work just as well, and some even come with features designed for RV use.
3. Use a Sink or Stove Cover
Covers that fit over your sink or stove turn unused space into an extra prep area. They’re easy to put on and take off and are available in wood, plastic, or cutting-board material. Some RVs already come with these, but you can also buy aftermarket versions that fit most models.
4. Use Magnetic Strips
Mount magnetic strips inside cabinet doors to hold knives, scissors, or other metal utensils. This gets them off the counter and out of drawers, and you can access them quickly. It also works for things like spice jars with metal lids.
5. Use Vertical Space
Mount hooks, caddies, or shelves under or on the sides of cabinets, walls, and even fridge doors. Even the space above the microwave or fridge can be used with the right setup. Think about where you can hang or attach things instead of setting them down.
6. Dry Your Dishes Over the Sink
A dish rack that fits over your sink saves counter space and lets your dishes drip-dry without getting the surrounding area wet. Some racks roll up or fold when not in use, which helps keep things tidy.
7. Cook Outdoors
Cooking outside with a portable grill, stove, or even over a fire reduces mess and avoids cluttering your kitchen countertops with appliances.
8. Add a Countertop Extension
You can install a foldable or pull-out shelf that adds extra space when needed. These extensions come in a variety of styles and materials and are usually easy to mount on the end of your existing counter. When not in use, just fold them down out of the way.
9. Hang Utensils or Mugs Under Cabinets
Install hooks or a small hanging rack underneath your upper cabinets to hold cooking utensils, mugs, or small pans. This keeps them off the counter and within easy reach.
10. Store Cutting Boards Vertically
Instead of laying cutting boards flat, use a narrow rack or tension rod to store them upright next to the stove or inside a cabinet. This keeps them accessible but out of the way.
11. Attach a Paper Towel Holder to the Wall or Cabinet
Instead of setting a roll of paper towels on the counter, mount a holder under a cabinet or on the wall. There are adhesive and screw-in options depending on what works best for your space.
12. Use Inside-Cabinet Door Organizers
Mount small shelves, pockets, or bins on the inside of cabinet doors for things like spices, cleaning supplies, or dish soap. This uses dead space and helps reduce clutter on the counter.
