# Motorhome Carrying 15 People Overturns on Florida Highway - Two Children Killed, Dozens Injured

A predawn crash involving a motorhome in northwest Marion County has left two children dead and many others fighting for their lives, drawing attention from RV owners across the country who know how quickly a routine trip can turn tragic.

The collision happened shortly before 6 a.m. on Saturday, December 27, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and County Road 316 near Williston, according to information released by the Florida Highway Patrol. A motorhome carrying 15 people from Springfield, Ohio, was traveling south when it was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe crossing the highway. The impact caused the coach to overturn and slide off the roadway.

A 5-year-old boy inside the motorhome died at the scene. Twelve other occupants were taken to nearby hospitals with critical injuries, while two additional people in the RV, including the driver, were treated for minor injuries. The Tahoe’s driver, a 25-year-old woman from Old Town, Florida, was also critically injured. Florida Highway Patrol later confirmed she was 35 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash and delivered the baby at the hospital. The newborn did not survive, according to an update provided by investigators.

The Florida Highway Patrol has stated the crash remains under review. On Monday, troopers reported that the Tahoe went off the roadway, crossed a grassy area, and struck the side of the motorhome, leading to the rollover. No findings have been released regarding speed, right-of-way, or possible citations.

One detail noted in the initial crash report has drawn public interest. Florida Highway Patrol said none of the 15 motorhome occupants were using seatbelts or child restraints at the time of the collision. That detail was widely cited in early reporting, though troopers have not released further clarification as the investigation continues.

For residents who live near the intersection, the news did not come as a surprise. Several locals told reporters the crossing has been the site of previous serious crashes and pointed to limited warning features on County Road 316. One nearby resident said she heard children crying after the collision and later learned how many victims were involved.

U.S. 27 was shut down for several hours as crews worked to remove the wreckage and investigators documented the scene. Families in Ohio and Florida are now mourning two young lives lost while hoping for recovery for those still hospitalized.

FHP has not indicated when its full report will be completed. More information may come out in the weeks ahead as investigators review roadway conditions, vehicle movement, and other factors surrounding the crash.
