# Do RV Black Tank Rinse Tools Actually Work? A Clear-Tank Test Shows Their Limits

You hook up the hose, turn on the water, and hear it spraying inside the black tank.

But how much of the tank is that spray actually reaching?

In a [clear-tank demonstration from Unique Camping + Marine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc3-u0rap1s), Chris, a certified RV technician, tries five common rinsing tools. The results might surprise you.

Let’s see which tools fell short, which one worked better, and what might actually help rinse your black tank.

## How the Five Tools Performed

| Tool tested | Result in Unique’s demonstration | Main limitation or use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Camco Flexible Swivel Stik** | Spray did not reach the far wall. | Flexible wand accommodates offset toilet plumbing; still adds rinse water. |
| **Camco Tornado** | Head barely rotated and produced a weak spray. | Limited spray coverage in this setup. |
| **Valterra Flush King** | Plumbing bends interrupted the direct jet into the tank. | Refills the tank through the discharge plumbing. |
| **Valterra Master Blaster** | Presenter favored its directed spray over the other tested rinsers. | Requires straight access from the toilet into the tank. |
| **Johnny Chock** | Held the toilet valve open for filling or wand access. | Provides no cleaning spray itself. |

**Important**: These results describe Unique’s test setup. Your tank’s shape, plumbing, and water supply can affect performance.

## Camco Flexible Swivel Stik: The Spray Falls Short

The Flexible Swivel Stik goes down through the toilet. Its flexible section is intended to get through bends when the toilet doesn't sit directly above the tank opening.

That access is useful, but the spray in this demonstration falls short of the far wall. Water enters the tank without delivering the across-the-tank rinse Chris describes expecting from it.

For an owner with offset toilet plumbing, the wand may still offer a way to get rinse water into the tank.

## Camco Tornado: Not Much of a Tornado in This Setup

The Camco Tornado mounts to the tank and uses a rotating head to spray the interior. But in this test, it barely spins, and the water mostly dribbles out.

Chris says it can still add water for another dump, but the spray shown here offers little help reaching across the tank.

## Valterra Flush King: A Refill, Not a Straight Shot

The Flush King connects to the RV’s waste outlet and sends water back toward the black tank. In this test, the stream hits plumbing bends along the way, so it gradually fills the tank rather than blasting the walls.

That fits part of its advertised purpose. [Valterra describes the Flush King](https://valterra.com/product/flush-king-reverse-rv-flush-valve-boxed/) as a tool for refilling and flushing tanks, including through plumbing bends.

Chris recommends a backflusher with its own gate valve, like this one. With that external valve closed and the RV’s black tank valve open, water can fill the tank. Otherwise, much of it may flow straight back out through the sewer hose.

## Valterra Master Blaster: A Basic Wand Performs Better

The Master Blaster produces the directed spray Chris favors in this test. Its fixed, right-angle nozzle lets the person holding it choose where the water goes.

He recommends turning the wand gradually and moving it gently up and down to reach different surfaces. Instead of relying on a spinning head, the user aims the stream.

There is a fairly large catch, however: the wand needs a straight path from the toilet into the tank. If your toilet connects through offset plumbing, this particular tool may not reach where you need it.

Even with straight access, aiming inside an enclosed tank involves some guesswork as you can't see every corner through the toilet opening.

## Johnny Chock: An Extra Hand for the Toilet Valve

The Johnny Chock essentially just holds the toilet valve open. It helps when adding water through the toilet or using a rinse wand.

It provides no spray of its own, so it really belongs in a different category than the rinsers. Think of it as a convenience accessory.

In the demonstration, Chris places the choke onto the Master Blaster before inserting the wand. It's a small detail, but a useful one if you plan to use them together.

## Why Adding Water and Dumping Again Makes Sense

Chris recommends adding water after the initial dump, then dumping again to help wash out what’s left. We agree, though we prefer pouring water through the toilet with a bucket. That sends a rush of water into the tank, which may help loosen waste near the toilet inlet before the next dump.

But we wouldn’t follow his advice to fill the tank completely through the built-in rinser when the warning label says to keep the drain open. [Jayco’s 2026 towable owner’s manual](https://www.jayco.com/uploads/rvs/manuals/645-Jayco-Family-Towable-Manual-Vs2---2026---WEB.pdf), for example, tells owners to leave that valve open while using the flush.

If your instructions say the same, adding water through the toilet lets you prepare for another dump without going against that warning. Keep track of how much you’re adding, stay with it, and don't overfill it.

## So, Do These Tools Work?

The Master Blaster gave Chris the best spray in this test, but it needs a straight shot through the toilet. The other rinsers were less impressive, though they could still add water for another dump.

We wouldn’t rush to replace a tool you already own based on this video alone. It shows where the water goes in one tank, but it doesn't measure how much waste each tool removes.

If you’re shopping for one, check your plumbing first. A wand that sprays well won’t help much if it can’t get into your tank. And before buying another gadget, try adding water through the toilet with a bucket and dumping again. You may already have what you need.
